IntermediateA Football County Championship 1st Round

The newly promoted Kinsale Intermediate football team had their first championship victory in this grade in 70 years after a very promising performance against Cill na Martra in Ballincollig last Saturday night. It didn't take Kinsale very long to settle into their new surroundings as Padraig Buckley executed a brilliant goal in as early as the 2nd minute. This was followed by some excellent scores from Conor O'Brien and Richard O'Sullivan. Despite the danger Cill na Martra posed in attack they were unable to eat into Kinsale's lead in any dramatic way and when Conor O'Brien found Fergus O'Callaghan unmarked in the middle to register Kinsale's second goal things looked bleak for the mid Cork side. They did manage to bring the score back to 2-2 to 0-4, but Kinsale had no difficulty in finding the target at the other end, the platform for which was built on solid midfield play from David Coughlan and wing backs Brian Murphy and Mark Coughlan. Kinsale led 2-7 to 0-5 at half time. The pace of the game seemed to drop slightly in the second half, a half in which the highlights were a number of fine points from Kevin Cahill and Richard O'Sullivan and also some excellent play from Conor Lane and Michael O'Sullivan in defense. Despite a late consolation goal for Cill na Martra and a rather harsh sending off, Kinsale never looked like surrendering their lead and ran out comfortable winners in the end on a score line of 2-12 to 1-9. The draw for the 3rd round will be made on completion of the losers round.
